The 31th Taiwan Fashion Design Award
Po Shou Peng Won the First Prize in the Final Selection
The “2017 Taiwan Fashion Design Award (TFDA)” final selection runway show and award ceremony was held on November 17th at Taipei Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. Out of 468 entrants from 21 countries who participated in the preliminary contest, 12 outstanding designers stood out; they were given the opportunity to showcase their talent in the final selection. Under his selection “Śūdra ambush”, Po Shou Peng, a young talent from Taiwan, won this year’s First Prize and the high bonus of US$ 10,000. Two second prize awards each worth US$5,000 were Shun Leong Yeung from Hong Kong and Yu Chang Lai from Taiwan with their works entitled “Der Wille zur Macht” and “To my IRON MAN”. The third prizes were divided into 3 categories and worth US$3,000 each: Yi Chun Chiu for the Best Fabrics Use and Hin Yu Hsu for the Best Pattern Making, and Chan Hsin Wu for the Best Market Potential.
Outstanding Designers Showcasing Endless Creativity
Organized by the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs and executed by the Taiwan Textile Federation (TTF), the TFDA is entering its 31st anniversary this year. In order to accelerate the expansion of Taiwan’s international macro design energy and vision, since 2013, overseas students were encouraged to participate to this competition. Professionals in fashion industry, from around the world, have been invited to serve as judges for this Award. This year’s jury is composed by 6 influential professionals who are renowned in international fashion world, including the Japanese designer Dai Fujiwara, the Taiwanese designer Stephane Dou, Anupreet Bhui, WGSN Senior Editor , Tomonori Matsui, ONEO Ltd. CEO, Jane Singer, Inside Fashion Director and Head of Market Intelligence and Charlotte Chiang, Deputy Director of TTF’s Design Department.
The jury’s consensus is, unlike the past, this year’s design content is unprecedented in a greater proportion in men’s selection, more than half of total submission, which reflects industry’s recent surge in men’s fashion. Under to premise of an open competition, there is a greater variety in design concept and design theme, in which the participants maximized their creative freedom and resulted in a wide range of style including inspirations from military uniforms, hip-pop, sportswear, and kids wear. In terms of color, there is a high contrast of polychromatic energy and monochromatic constraint. These approaches represent the new generation’s fearless, individualistic interpretation of fashion design. The First Prize winner Po Shou Peng, with his/her stunning collection “Śūdra ambush”, which is exemplary in its inventiveness in fabric choice and pattern structure, outstanding in its fine balance between commercial appeal and artistic integrity.
Textile and Apparel Enterprises Supporting TFDA
Since 1987, TFDA has become a platform for fashion design oriented companies to discover potential talents. Most winners continue to blossom in the industry, and they are to become potential forces that cultivates the development of textile and apparel industry. In order to encourage students to enter into the industry, the industry elites have also been extremely supportive of TFDA activities. This year, with strong sponsorship of companies such as Eclat Textile Co., Ltd., Wintex Knitwear Corp., Yi Jinn Industrial Co., Ltd. and Fortune Industrial and Commercial Development Foundation, together they contributed to the total prize of US$ 35,000.
